Last week we discussed the 2nd (of 3) trend that has staying power until fall. The first trend was chambray. Last week's was maxi dress (styled for summer and fall), and this week? Colored Denim. I didn't discuss guy style last week so this week I'll point out some tips on shoes to wear with shorts- this idea came to me because my husband had this quandary. Not wanting to wear shorts and flip flops to church, he wanted an alternative to make shorts look a little dressier. Later that week he mentioned seeing a tweet from GQ about the same topic! So here we go! I wonder if you're sick of hearing about colored denim yet. Or if like me, you can't get enough. Clearly I hope it's the latter! Well be prepared to continue haring about colored denim for a bit longer. This trend has staying power into the fall (and I personally hope for many seasons beyond). Here are a few tips on wearing colored denim beyond summer into fall: 1. Pick jeans in jewel tones (coincidentally jewel tones are also big for fall) versus the neon shades of summer. These deeper shades are more in line with cool weather and the change of season.
2. If jewel tones aren't your thing, try choosing pale color. Pale pink or tan would look great accented by classic fall staple colors like brown and ivory. 3. Pick skinny or boot cut styles that you can wear over boots or tucked into boots. For us tall gals, even cropped lengths would work since we could tuck them into tall boots! Here are some examples of perfect colored denim suitable for fall:
For those of you 40+ I know you might not think this particular trend works for you. But think again! You may not want to choose the slimmest jean you can find, but the boyfriend pair is forgiving, classy, and stylish. I'd also choose the dark red pair if I were you. (The retailer featured is on the "junior" side so depending on your size or shape it may or may not work for you). However the color is perfect, so look for that color from more mature retailers (as usual- TCM is your go-to resource to find retailers that sell tall/long clothing items in a variety of looks). The dark red pair could look very elegant with a dark blazer and a white button down, or a large weave ivory sweater. Don't think you're past the point where you can wear colored denim!
Tips and Trends: Guy Style |
I mentioned earlier the quandary my husband had when trying to find something other than flip flops to wear with shorts. I started thinking that I bet there are more men out there who have had this same question. Perhaps you have a casual event...but not that casual. Or maybe you are a runner and really don't want to show off your runner's toes. Well I want to tell you to resist the urge to wear sneakers (my humble opinion is unless you're going to the gym or leaving it, you shouldn't be wearing running shoes). Although I've transitioned to begin to talk about fall trends we still have a couple of good months of summer--maybe more if you live in the south. So you may be wearing shorts for a while yet. Basically you're options are boat shoes, slip ons, or loafers. Well I'm here to tell you that boat shoes are no longer blue blood. They come in a variety of styles to suit varying personalities and tastes. I went conservative with these picks but there are some great patterns and colors out there. I've picked a variety of all of those categories to showcase. Here are my options for shoes that are suitable to wear with shorts that will have you looking grown up and stylish.
