Tips and Trends
I'll start by saying just because you're 40 (+) doesn't mean you have to be boring when it comes to your clothing choices. You can still be stylish and on trend. I hope that when I'm 40, 50, 60, even 70 and older, that I will continue to care about my appearance and make an effort to look chic. That said I understand the frustration when you hit a certain age and you don't know where to shop. Your daughter is shopping in the juniors section and your mom is shopping in the misses section. What's left for you? I've found myself in that predicament (especially when looking for cocktail dresses! Oy!). In addition it can be a challenge when it appears that most clothing is made for women who are 5'7" and 110 lbs. When we reach our 40s many of us have had children, careers, and/or the general busy-ness of life which have all contributed to a few extra pounds. The great thing about your 40s is that you can accept yourself and be confident- something twenty-somethings only strived for. So the question is how do we dress our age, embrace our curves, all while looking stylish and chic? Well here are a few basic items that are stylish yet suitable for a woman in her 40s (or older).
40 and Fabulous:
I'll start by saying none of these items/outfits looks "old." And why would they? 40 is young! All of these items are current, stylish, and will stand the test of time.
Striped One Button Cardigan- This cardigan is very versatile. I love the asymmetrical center button. It not only looks great but is helpful in hiding a midsection. Grey is one of those must have neutrals that works well with every color.
Tall Curvy Fit Pants- These pants are the perfect shape for a tall women. A slight flare, a medium rise, and a safe color. They look great paired with the cardigan but would look equally elegant with a button up or a blouse.
Pintucked Satin Blouse- This blouse is pretty without being cutesy. I myself am a little afraid of pattern, but this one is small and nearly reads like a solid. This blouse also comes in pearl. If you feel ruffles are too "young," I'd urge you to reconsider. You want to embrace youthful trends--but in a grown up way. If I haven't convinced you though, try layering it under a cardigan or blazer for a more refined look.
MiH Marrakesh Kick Flare Jeans- say it with me: No more mom jeans! (If you're not familiar with the popular SNL sketch, please YouTube it immediately!). I've heard it over and over again, from professional stylists and fashion icons to your average fashion blogger like me- flared jeans look good on everyone! This dark rinse is perfect for the modern woman and makes a great staple item. I was careful to choose a flare that wasn't too pronounced (i.e. bell bottom) as well as choosing a mid rise versus a low rise waist.
Modern Trouser Jeans- If you're afraid of the flare, try a wide legged trouser. This silhouette is particularly flattering on curves. I actually bought this very pair for myself around Christmas time, but you know who else I purchased them for? My mom--who is in her mid 50s. I can tell you that she never would have bought them for herself. But she said, and I quote, "These are the best pair of jeans I've ever owned." End quote! She is curvy and a size 10. These jeans are very slimming. I recently visited her and she wore them with a white blouse and a pair of red wedges. I couldn't have been prouder! She looked amazing! PS- if you tell my mom I told you her age AND her size she will kill me (and then where would you go for all your tall style advice?!), so let's keep that between us!
Solid Wrap Dress- The wrap dress has been around forever--and for good reason. It's classy, suitable for all ages, and always in style. The clean lines are appropriate for 40 somethings, while the gathers and ties at the waist serve as camouflage. I chose the safe navy color option but if you're daring, it also comes in summer azalea.
Nightclub Flat Sandal- Because I picked fairly safe color options for the clothing, I chose this bright yellow sandal. I love color (if you haven't noticed by now!), but I know not everyone does. Using colorful accessories is what I call a "safe" way to wear color. This brand is known for putting comfort first without sacrificing style. In my experience the older women get, the less tolerance they have for heels so this is a flat option.
Aerosoles Women's Ginerator Sandal - Even if you don't love heels some occasions call for a bit of a heel. These patent pink shoes also add a bit of pizzazz to any outfit. Notice how both the light pink and bright yellow shoes could match every outfit/clothing item featured? And though this heel is high, it's not over the top. As with the other shoes, the brand features comfort so even a 3 inch heel is wearable. Both shoes come in sizes up to 12.
