Here in Colorado the weather is unpredictable this time of the year. It actually snowed this weekend! But, it could be quite warm in a few days. Wardrobe planning is becoming a challenge as temperatures can fluctuate greatly day by day. I think it's finally time to get out our Winter clothing. Our walk in closet is really small. My husband, also a clothes horse, needs his fair share of the closet. Luckily we have a downstairs closet that stores most of our Winter clothing.
- It's time to take a good hard look at your current wardrobe. What items can you donate to your local goodwill store? Do you have clothing that requires mending or alternations? Separate these items and don't put back into your closet until they are fixed.
- If there are items you will not wear this season, clean them. If you have room elsewhere, it is best to store them in bins in a separate location in your home or garage.
- Some of your current summery shirts and dresses can still be worn year round. For instance: wear the shirts and Summer dresses under blazers or cardigans. Many mid-thigh dresses can now be worn with tights and paired with knee high boots, or pair over leggings. A cardigan can be your best investment piece for Fall as it's great for layering.
- You may want to keep some of your shorts and t-shirts in your closet. If you are going to wear them on an occasional basis, put these items toward the rear of the closet.
- Now it's time to rearrange your closet and put your cold weather clothing back in. I like to group my clothing by categories such as long sleeves, short sleeve shirts, sweaters, skirts, etc. Then I further group them by color for easy sorting.
- Never hang sweaters as they can become misshapen over time. Fold them and place on closet shelves, in dresser drawers or in clear bins.
- Since space is an issue, I have ditched the shoe racks. A couple of large bins function best for us. I separate shoes in casual and dressy styles. Yes, it takes, a bit more time to find what I need, but it saves space.
- Matching hangers helps to keep everything at eye level and it easier to sort through.
- For accessories: several scarves can hang on one hanger, my husband has a revolving tie rack mounted to our closet wall, and all purses are stored in bins. Yes, I may be the bin queen, but hey they are inexpensive!
I hope some of these tips, may be helpful. If not, just move to a warm weather destination such as Hawaii {my dream} as you only need one wardrobe!
